American Kestrel

Description:

Seventeen subspecies of the American Kestrel are recognized, generally based upon plumage, size, and vocalizations.
Cuba has two subspecies: the nominate (North American) species Falco sparverius sparverius (as a wintering migrant species) and the Cuban subspecies Falco sparverius sparverioides (as a resident species) which is the most distinctive, with two colour morphs; one with a red/rufous chest and belly, and the other with a white chest and belly.
The Cuba subspecies is the only subspecies of American Kestrel having two morphs.
