Description:
The matured male Blue Skimmer (Orthetrum caledonicum) is powder blue in colour with a tapered dark abdomen tip.
Matured females are brownish grey in colour.
Both male and female have clear wings with a brown wash near the wing tip.
Young males and young females have a yellow body with dull black patterns.
When maturing, the male will become light powder blue and the female becomes brownish grey.
Old females gradually turn into powder blue, but never reach the full colour as the male.
The Blue Skimmer is widespread throughout Australia.
