Churchyard Beetle

Description:

The Churchyard Beetle (Blaps mucronata) belongs to the family Tenebrionidae (Darkling Beetles) and is 20-24 mm long.
Characteristic is the tail-shaped extension of the elytra.
It resembles a ground beetle (family Carabidae) but moves much slower.
The Churchyard Beetle cannot fly.
The Churchyard Beetle looks very similar to the Death Beetle (Blaps mortisaga).
Both species are barely distinguishable from each other, but the Churchyard Beetle is usually slightly smaller.
