Description:
Dasypoda hirtipes is a large bee whose female specimens are easily recognizable in the field by the bright yellow colored plumes (hair) on the hind legs.
The plumes of Dasypoda hirtipes are long hairs and serve as an aid to excavate sand.
Large amounts of pollen are also transported between the hairs.
In addition to the plumes, the females also have bright white transverse bands and partly a black back, head and broad abdomen tip.
There are two color varieties in the males: ocher/brown and gray specimens.
They also have loose cross straps and a light face.
In Europe there are 15 species of plume foot bees, mainly around the Mediterranean area.
Only one species occurs in The Netherlands.
