Dolichopus is a large cosmopolitan genus of fly in the family Dolichopodidae.
Adults are small flies, typically less than 8 mm in length.
Nearly all species are metallic greenish-blue to greenish-bronze.
It is the largest genus of Dolichopodidae with more than 600 species worldwide.

Dolichopus ungulatus can easily be confused with Dolichopus claviger.
However, Dolichopus claviger is generally more slender than Dolichopus ungulatus and the postocular bristles (behind the eyes) are pale in Dolichopus claviger while those on Dolichopus ungulatus are all black.
Both do have multiple preapical dorsal bristles on the mid and hind femur (thigh).

This species was identified by Marc Pollet, a Belgian expert on Dolichopodidae.
