Description:
The European Pond Turtle (Emys orbicularis) is found in southern and central Europe, West Asia and North Africa.
However, they have become rare in most countries, mainly due to habitat destruction.
The European Pond Turtle is generally carnivorous but it seems that it feeds also on plants as it ages and grows in size.
Worms, insects, frogs, and fishes comprise their main sources of food and they generally feed in water.
Embryos exhibit temperature-dependent sex determination, based on egg incubation temperature.
During the thermosensitive period of incubation, eggs at temperatures below 25 degrees Celsius will become male embryos, while eggs at temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius will become female embryos.
