Description:
In 2010, Blue-crowned Motmot was split into five distinct species and in 2016 even in six distinct species:
1. Blue-capped Motmot (Momotus coeruliceps),
2. Lesson’s Motmot (Momotus lessonii),
3. Whooping Motmot (Momotus subrufescens),
4. Trinidad Motmot (Momotus bahamensis),
5. Amazonian Motmot (Momotus momota), and
6. Andean Motmot (Momotus aequatorialis).
Lesson's Motmot is one of the most common and widespread species of motmot in Central America, with a distribution that extends from southern Mexico south to central Panama.
Its distribution is sandwiched in between two similar, closely related species.
To the north, in northeastern Mexico, Lesson's Motmot is replaced by Blue-capped Motmot (Momotus coeruliceps), which has a completely turquoise blue crown.
At the other end of its range, Lesson's Motmot is replaced in central Panama by Whooping Motmot (Momotus subrufescens).
