Description:
The Maritime striped squirrel (Tamiops maritimus) is one of the five species within the genus Tamiops, also known as 'Asiatic striped squirrels', which are all found in Asia.
They all have small rounded ears with white-tipped hairs and a black longitudinal stripe in the middle of the back, parallelled by two pale and one brown longitudinal stripes on both sides.
Asiatic striped squirrels can be identified by the differences in the stripe pattern, especially on the face.
For instance, the pale cheek stripe of the Swinhoe's Striped Squirrel (Tamiops swinhoei) is wider than the stripe of Tamiops maritimus.
Tamiops maritimus is the only Tamiops species that occurs in Cat Ba National Park.
