Description:
Opaon varicolor is a member of the subfamily Rhytidochrotinae which is a subfamily of grasshoppers from the family Acrididae. This group is found from southern Central America to northern South America (Costa Rica to Brazil) with most species distributed in montane forests.
This is one of the colorful, but wingless Rhytidochrotinae grasshoppers of the neotropics. Grasshoppers from the genus Opaon vary in color which surely indicate they are poisonous or foul-tasting to predators.
They can be approached easily to take their picture. This particular species is endemic to the Chocó areas in Colombia.
