Description:
The Purple Emperor is a relatively large butterfly with a wing length of 31 to 40 mm.
The wings of the male show special structural colors due to iridescence.
This means that depending on the angle of the sunlight, the wings can discolor from brown to a beautiful blue color.
The female's wings do not have this and are brown.
This butterfly is quite rare in the Netherlands, expanding its range slowly from the southern and eastern parts of the Netherlands to the central parts, especially Flevoland.
