The Tree Grayling (Hipparchia statilinus) is a rather variable butterfly, especially in the shades of brown present on the wings and in the intensity of the white bands.
The upperside of the forewing is black gray to dark brown without an orange band.
The underside of the forewing is brown and has some eye spots.
In the male the underside of the hindwing has light and dark bands, in the female the underside is almost solid gray.
This butterfly can be found in dry, rocky, grassy and bushy areas in Central Europe, Southern Europe and North Africa.
