The breeding range of the Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) spans eastern North America and along the coast of California and northern to northeastern-central Mexico.
There are five subspecies of the Red-shouldered Hawk, with one being the west coast version and two being Florida versions that are paler than the other more red versions found in the eastern part of the US.
In Florida, Lake Okeechobee seems generally the geographic dividing line between the two Florida subspecies.
Buteo lineatus alleni is the subspecies found from the Panhandle to Lake Okeechobee.
Buteo lineatus extremus is found from Lake Okeechobee south to the Keys.
