Six subspecies of Sandhill Crane have been recognized and they vary in size.
Three of these subspecies migrate and travel to or over Texas during their winter migration:
- the Greater Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis tabida; breeds in the northern U.S.),;
- the Lesser Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis canadensis; breeds in the Arctic); and
- the Canadian Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis rowani; breeds in Canada; winters in North Mexico).
