The Russet-backed Oropendola is found in wooded habitats in the highlands of the northern and central Andes and the Venezuelan coastal range, and in lowlands of the western Amazon. 
This species has seven subspecies. 
This is Psarocolius angustifrons alfredi occurring in the east Andean slopes and foothills from South East Ecuador south to Peru and Central Bolivia.
