Description:
Wild Goats, often referred to as Persian Ibex or Bezoar Goats, were imported from Iran and released in 1970 on the isolated Florida Mountains, which includes Spring Canyon State Park, of southern New Mexico.
The Florida Mountains near Deming are the only place in the US where these Wild Goats roam freely.
Their numbers have since stabilized at 400-450 individuals.
The ibex in the Florida Mountains are not true ibex but they are Persian wild goats.
They're believed to be the predecessor of all domestic goats.
Ibex and Wild Goats are two separate species and do not interbreed, but are both of the genus Capra.
