Description:
The Grey-headed Flying Fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) is the largest bat in Australia.
It has a dark-grey body with a light-grey head, separated by a reddish-brown collar.
Adults may have a wingspan reaching one meter in length and be up to one kilogram in weight.
Unlike many other species of bat, it does not echolocate, but it relies on smell and, predominately, sight to locate its food (nectar, pollen and native fruits).
As a consequence, it has relatively large eyes for a bat.
The Grey-headed Flying Fox is one of the four in Australia occurring flying foxes and is endemic to the south-eastern forested areas of Australia.
