Adult male Eurasian Sparrowhawks have bluish grey upperparts (wings) and an orange-barred chest and belly.
Adult females have greyish-brown upperparts and have a greyish-barred chest and belly and white spots on their backs.
Juveniles have brown upperparts and have a brown-barred chest and belly.
Females are up to 25% larger and 50% heavier than males – one of the largest differences between the sexes in any bird species.
Males have thin legs.
Long nails are characterictic for Eurasian Sparrowhawks.
Males tend to take smaller birds like tits, finches and sparrows.
Females prefer thrushes and starlings.
