The Black Coucal (38 cm) is the smallest coucal of the 6 coucal species occurring in Uganda.
Both breeding adult male and female are all black with chestnut wings.
Non-breeding adults are heavily streaked buff and brown on head and upperback and mottled brown below.
Immatures are like non-breeding adults but have more extensive barring on the crown.
