Description:
Chameleons in the genus Brookesia are the world's smallest lizards.
Until recently, Brookesia micra was considered the smallest reptile in the world (max. 2.9 cm) and Brookesia minima as the second-smallest in the world (max 3.4 cm).
However, in January 2021 a new species was discovered (found in 2012 but 9 years later identified as a new species) in Sorata, in the north of Madagascar: Brookesia nana.
At a body length of just 13.5 mm and a total length of just 22 mm including the tail, the male Brookesia nana is now the world’s smallest reptile.
The female Brookesia nana is larger at 19 mm body length and 29 mm total length.
