Description:
The Gaudy Commodore (Precis octavia) has two subspecies: a northern subspecies (Precis octavia octavia) which is found in the northern and western part of Africa and a southern subspecies (Precis octavia sesamus) which is found in southern and eastern part of Africa.
This butterfly shows extreme seasonal dimorphism: one part of the year it looks completely different from the next.
Both subspecies have a wet season (summer) form, which is orange with black markings on the upperside, and a dry (winter) season form which is shining blue with a vivid red band on the hindwing.
In both forms the males and females are alike, however the females are slightly larger.
Uganda has the southern subspecies (Precis octavia sesamus).
