Western Emperor Swallowtail

Description:

The Western Emperor Swallowtail (Papilio menestheus) is a tailed butterfly and quite unmistakable in Ghana.
It has a wingspan of 110-130mm.
There is an eyespot on the hindwing at the inner margin which is black with orange and shiny blue (extra orange coloured spots may appear around the eyespot), while another red or dark orange spot is visible at the top of the outer margin.
It is a West-African species which is distributed in forests from Senegal to western Cameroun.
